The Atragenes - Alpinas, Koreanas and Macropetalas
This is the text only version of this page - if you would like the same content but with thumbnail images that link to larger pictures please go Here
C. alpina is a native of North-East Asia and Europe, (single flowers) and c. macropetala hails from Siberia & China (semi-double). The Atragenes, as they are known, are hardy easy clematis (down to -30°F). They tolerate shade, wind and poor soil, will grow on North walls, are trouble free and don't get wilt. The flowers in spring are profuse, then intermittently throughout the summer and autumn followed by good seedheads. Although not evergreen, they start into leaf early. They can be grown in containers and also look pretty planted so they cascade down - by steps, or in rockeries for example. Depth of colour in some varieties varies according to the warmth (or coldness) of the spring. Flower size is roughly 2 - 4 inches across and 2 - 4 inches long. Temp. Zones 3 - 9

macropetala 'Wesselton': New Exceptionally large nodding double flowers in clear mid-blue. The largest flowered variety I have seen. The stock plant was given to us by Sylvia and Vince Denny, who in turn had it from Jim Fisk himself, who introduced the plant and named it after his home village using the old spelling. It seems to flower for longer than most, it being well into June before it finished here. Apr-Jun 6-8ft Any 1
macropetala 'White Lady': A good white variety from Tage Lundell in Sweden. Plenty of spikey white flowers against light green foliage. Apr-May 8ft Any 1
macropetala 'White Swan': An unfortunate name, as the flower is definitely cream rather than white with a green tint when first open. Unusual and attractive. Apr-May 8ft Any 1
