Herbaceous Clematis
This is the text only version of this page - if you would like the same content but with thumbnail images that link to larger pictures please go Here
For some reason the herbaceous forms of clematis have been unjustifiably neglected by gardeners - the notion that some clematis don't climb comes as a surprise. Some of these varieties are very dainty and small, not much more than 2 1/2 ft, whereas others can be very vigorous and make excellent ground cover plants. Most die down to ground level in the autumn, some go back to a woody rootstock. All are hard pruning and exceptionally easy plants to grow. They have no tendrils at the back of the leaf nodes to enable them to climb, but will meander through a border and amongst existing plants in a delightful manner, adding interest to shrubs that have finished flowering, or providing a contrast of colour and form. Some are sturdy enough to stand as border plants in their own right though they may need a little staking. Their autumn seed-heads add further interest to the garden. Temp. Zones are listed individually.
