Texensis

The species clematis texensis is difficult to grow and not terribly hardy. Crossed with tougher parents, the named varieties are amongst the most beautiful of flowers and the aristocrats of the clematis world. They are perfectly hardy, though in colder districts they will appreciate a mulch in the autumn and they will behave as herbaceous plants, coming up from below the ground - in warmer climates they would break from the leaf nodes. We find that in Northern gardens a sunny aspect is important they are late flowering and they need the sun to ripen them. They look particularly attractive grown with other plants, such as roses and small shrubs, or, if they are a tulip type, grown along the front of a border. They all need hard pruning. Temp. Zones 4 - 9.
Sorry, we are no longer able to provide a mail order service. Visitors to the nursery are welcome.

Description Flowers Height Aspect Prune
texensis Duchess of Albany: AGM Deep pink sepals with deeper rose pink bars. The flowers look like pointed tulips and are held upright, so grow them over a low shrub where they can be admired. Flower 1 - 2" diam. Jul-Oct 6-8ft E.S.W. 3
texensis Etoile Rose: The nodding flowers are cerise pink edged in silver. This one is best grown over an archway, so you can look up into it. It's a gem. 1-2"diam. £8.75 Jul-Oct 8-12ft E.S.W. 3
texensis Gravetye Beauty: Opening wider than the above two forms. The inside of the flower is a bright ruby red. They begin like red tulips and end like stars. 1-2" diam. Aug-Sep 8-12ft E.S.W. 3
texensis Ladybird Johnson: Tulip shaped flowers, deep purply red at the edges with a dark red bar. The tips open to show a contrasting cream centre. £10.50 Jul-Sep 6-8ft E.S.W. 3
texensis Pagoda: Comparatively large creamy white nodding bells, the tips of the petals curving back, all edged with a dusky pink/mauve band on the outside, delicately veined red within. Has a lot of viticella in its parentage which can be seen in the shape. 3"diam. Jul-Oct 8-10ft E.S.W. 3
texensis Princess Diana: Very deep pink flowers with an even brighter pink bar. A little larger than other texensis, with creamy yellow stamens. They stand up like tulips. £10.50 Jul-Sep 6-8ft E.S.W. 3
texensis Sir Trevor Lawrence: Brilliant glowing crimson shading to light violet at the edges and curling over at the tips. Long creamy yellow stamens. 1-2"diam. Aug-Oct 6-8ft E.S.W. 3
